SDK v1.49 · Apple Silicon only

The JPEG 2000 codec
that finally keeps up
with Apple Silicon.

We rewrote the entire pipeline from scratch — Metal, NEON, unified memory, the Neural Engine. The result is something the JPEG 2000 world hasn't seen before: a software decoder that beats hardware codec cards.

Cross-platform codecs spend most of their cycles pretending every CPU is the same. We don't. MetaWave talks directly to Metal, the Neural Engine, NEON SIMD, and Apple's unified memory — every single time. That's how a MacBook keeps pace with a PCIe card.

Why only Apple Silicon?

Unified memory
No PCIe round-trips. The GPU reads the same bytes the CPU just wrote — about ten times faster than a discrete card.
Metal 4 tile shaders
We pack the JPEG 2000 wavelet transform into threadgroup memory in ways CUDA and OpenCL physically cannot reproduce.
Neural Engine
Color transforms and denoising land on the 16-core ANE while the GPU keeps decoding. Two engines, one frame budget.

All multi-component figures are bit-exact lossless round-trips. RCT, streaming framing (sequence number + 64-bit timestamp), and 10/12/16-bit byte-plane packing are built in. No external wrapper required.

Our entire AJA rack is gone. One Mac Studio does what three PCIe cards couldn't, and the radiologists stopped complaining about scrubbing.

Imaging director · US hospital network

Migration off Kakadu took two weeks, mostly because we were being paranoid. Eight times the throughput on the same M2 Pro fleet we already had.
